Recently, we had the pleasure of welcoming Latoya to our Belfast clinic for a period of work experience. Throughout her placement, she spent time observing different aspects of life in a busy urgent care setting, gaining valuable insight into patient care, clinical practice and the wider workings of a healthcare organisation.
As part of her placement, Latoya was also invited to observe elements of our recruitment process, providing a unique perspective on how healthcare teams are built and the qualities we look for when welcoming new colleagues to Emerald Urgent Care.
Reflecting on her experience, Latoya said:
"My work experience at Emerald Urgent Care was inspiring and has strengthened my determination to pursue medicine. From the very first day, I was welcomed by incredibly kind and friendly staff who went out of their way to make my placement meaningful and memorable for me.
With patients' full consent, I was able to sit in on consultations observing how clinicians communicate with empathy and reassurance. I also learned to recognise key signs and symptoms of various diseases, gained insight into how diagnostic machines work, and even had the opportunity to listen in on job interviews. This gave me an insight into the recruitment process for healthcare staff and how healthcare teams are built. This also gave me experience for future interviews and was extremely informative and an educational experience.
I also witnessed the genuine compassion and care for patients that underpinned every interaction. This experience has not only confirmed that medicine is the right path for me, but has also inspired me to work towards becoming a doctor who truly listens and cares for their patients. My placement at Emerald Urgent Care was an invaluable experience and I left knowing more certain than ever that I want to pursue my career in medicine."
